A Leafier Kind of Classroom in Potomac’s Backyard

Retired teachers taking their classroom skills to the great outdoors to introduce children to the C&O Canal.

An estimated one million children attend school along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which stretches from Washington, D.C. through Virginia and Maryland and out to Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Through the C&O Canal National Historic Park, children have the opportunity to spend hours out in nature learning the importance of the canal to the nation's capital and surrounding region.

Author Inspires Potomac Students To Write

Laura Krauss Melmed describes journey from idea to publication.

Students at Beverly Farms Elementary School learned about the writing process and how a book gets published from children’s book author Laura Krauss Melmed on Nov. 5 and 6. Melmed, who came to the school to read from her first picture book called “The Rainbabies,” is an award-winning author of 20 picture books including lyrical bedtime stories, original tales of magic, holiday books, and nonfiction books about cities and states.

Experiencing Life with Special Needs

Potomac school program teaches empathy and acceptance.

A classmate led Sophia Collins across the gym floor during a physical education class at Wayside Elementary School in Potomac last week. Sophia tried to pick up a golf ball and put it in a cup. This may sound like an overly simple task for a first grade student, but Sophia needed help because she couldn’t see.

The Gaithersburg Book Festival has launched its fifth annual short story contest for Washington, D.C., area high school students.

Norwood Students Experience History

Field trips allow students to see and touch at memorials.

History books came to life for about 55 eighth grade students who spent a day at the Holocaust Museum, FDR Memorial and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. The trip was part of Bethesday-based Norwood School’s seventh and eighth grade “World History Through an American Lens” curriculum.
