Park staff, volunteers, and visitors observed the C&O Canal National Historical Park’s 45th birthday with birthday cake, music, and 19th century games at Great Falls Tavern, on Saturday, Jan. 9. Thirty years of public debate over the future of the “Grand Old Ditch” ended on Jan.8, 1971 when President Nixon signed legislation creating the C&O Canal National Historical Park.

For her 90th birthday, Ruthjoy Leventhal requested “absolutely no gifts” from family and friends — but asked that each make a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation where she has served as a volunteer for many years making wishes come true for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. And her wish was granted - and granted - and granted again.
‘Little Shop of Horrors’ at Churchill

Destination for Fun
Glen Echo Park began in 1891 as a National Chautauqua Assembly, which taught the sciences, arts, languages, and literature. By the early 1900s Glen Echo Park had become an amusement park, serving the Washington area until 1968.

The Potomac Rotary Club unveiled commissioned murals on Feb. 20 to be installed at the Children’s National Medical Center in honor of Dr. John L. Sever, a founder of the Polio Plus effort of Rotary International to eradicate polio throughout the world.
